Mac Console: Troubleshooting connecting your SlingStudio to the Internet for live video streaming

Having trouble connecting your SlingStudio to the Internet for video streaming? Here are some troubleshooting tips.

First, it's important to understand that when you say "SlingStudio Wi-Fi" you could be talking about either of these two things:

  1. The Wi-Fi “hotspot” that is broadcast by the SlingStudio itself. SlingStudio broadcasts its own Wi-Fi hotspot for use when connecting devices to the SlingStudio such as:
    • An iPad running the Console app;
    • A macOS computer running SlingStudio Console for Mac;
    • An iPhone, iPod touch, or Android smartphone running the Capture app;
    • SlingStudio CameraLink connected to an HDMI camera.
  2. A Wi-Fi signal that the SlingStudio unit connects to for Internet service so that it can stream live video, such as via YouTube or Facebook. If you want to stream live video, then you must use SlingStudio Console to connect the SlingStudio unit to a locally-available Wi-Fi signal.
    Or you can also connect an Ethernet cable directly to the SlingStudio unit (via the Ethernet port on an optional SlingStudio USB-C Expander). If you connect the SlingStudio unit to a network this way, then you're all set—there's no need to do any configuration in SlingStudio Console.

Diagnosing an Internet connection problem

If you're trying to use the second type of network connection (a network that provides an Internet connection) but you're not able to make that work either via Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable, here are some things to look at.

  • Check the INTERNET status LED on the SlingStudio unit:
    • If it is green, then you should have a valid Internet connection;
    • If it is yellow, then the SlingStudio unit is connected to a Wi-Fi network, but that network is not connected to the Internet.
  • For a yellow INTERNET status LED, check your Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection:
    • For Wi-Fi connections:
    • SlingStudio Console for iPad:
      • Go to the SlingStudio unit's Settings (using the Console app).
      • Choose Internet Settings.
      • Confirm that you are entering the correct information for Wi-Fi network name (SSID), as well as the correct password for that Wi-Fi network.
    • SlingStudio Console for Mac
      • Click Internet (in the lower right of the Console).
      • Check to see that you're connected to the proper Wi-Fi network.
      • Confirm that you are entering the correct information for Wi-Fi network name (SSID), as well as the correct password for that Wi-Fi network.
    • For Ethernet connections:
    • SlingStudio Console for iPad:
      • Go to the SlingStudio unit's Settings (using the Console app).
      • Choose Internet Settings.
      • Confirm that the network connection is live.

Wi-Fi still doesn't work?

  • If Wi-Fi still doesn't work, then try connecting the SlingStudio to the network via an Ethernet cable:
    • Use the Ethernet port of the optional SlingStudio USB-C Expander to connect an Ethernet cable to your network.
    • Be certain that the Ethernet cable that you're using works, and that your Internet service is up. (Even if your network is working, it still might not have Internet access.)
    • The best way to determine this is by connecting the Ethernet cable to a regular computer, and then opening a web browser and making sure that you can see various websites.

Check for proper SlingStudio unit operation

  • Is the SlingStudio unit switched on? You should see a blue LED band illuminated across the top of the SlingStudio. If you don't see that, then the SlingStudio is not powered up.
    • Press and release the power button to turn on the SlingStudio.
    • If that doesn't work, then connect the SlingStudio to AC power. Be sure to connect it to an AC outlet that works properly. You can verify that by using a lamp or other electrical device to make sure that the AC outlet delivers power.
    • If you are using a SlingStudio Battery, make sure that it is connected. If the SlingStudio does not power up when it's connected to the SlingStudio Battery Pack, then it's likely that the Battery Pack batteries are exhausted. Connect the SlingStudio to AC power (as above) and confirm that the SlingStudio Battery Pack status LED illuminates (red if it is charging, green if it is fully charged).
    • Avoid power strips or AC outlets that are controlled by wall switches.
