Mac Console: Broadcasting live video with Facebook live

Here’s how you can use SlingStudio Console for Mac to broadcast (wirecast) your projects via Facebook Live.

What you'll need:

  • A SlingStudio unit
  • An network connection for the SlingStudio, either via Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable, that can access the Internet
  • One or more video sources
  • Mac computer with the latest Console software installed
  • Sign-on credentials for Facebook

Note: The following instructions help you produce a live video that is broadcast to your Facebook page. Your Facebook friends see this post in their feeds if you have set your Facebook timeline page privacy level to "public" or "friends." For other pages, groups, or events, this live video is broadcast to all users signed up for those pages, groups or events.

  1. Power up the SlingStudio.
  2. On your Mac, launch SlingStudio Console and connect your Mac's Wi-Fi to the SlingStudio hotspot.
  3. Connect your SlingStudio unit to Internet:
    1. Ethernet cable: Connect a live Ethernet cable to the SlingStudio using the SlingStudio USB-C Expander product.
    2. Wi-Fi: In SlingStudio Console, click Internet (in the lower-right corner of SlingStudio Console).
    3. Choose a Wi-Fi network to connect to.
Note: You can also confirm the operation of the Ethernet connection here.
  4. Prepare the video sources that you want to use and connect them to the SlingStudio hotspot.
  5. In SlingStudio Console, create a new Project.
  6. Set your new project with these settings:
    1. PRODUCTION OPTIONS: Choose Recording and Broadcasting or Broadcasting Only.
    2. Recording Options: Select the options that you wish, remembering that each added option requires more disk space.
    3. Video production (resolution): Choose Internet (720p30), Television (1080p30), or Pro30 (1080p30) settings.
Note: Even if you upload video using the 1080p30 setting, Facebook still plays the video back on its timeline at 720p30.
    4. Video Sources Bit rate: Choose a video source bit rate setting.
    5. Program Output Bit rate: Choose a setting for the Program Output bit rate. If you're not sure, choose a setting that is about halfway. We'll refine it shortly.
  7. Toward the bottom of the dialog box, in the Broadcasting Settings section, go to Upload Speed. Click SPEED CHECK. After several seconds, SlingStudio Console determines what the current upload speed is.
  8. Divide this Upload Speed figure approximately in half, and use that figure to refine the Program Output bit rate setting (from Step 6e above). Half the Upload Speed is a good number to start with. Lower settings can offer lower video quality … but also broadcasting with fewer skips. Higher settings offer the reverse.
Note: You can't change this setting once the project has been created. If you later decide that you need different bit rate settings, you'll need to create a new project.
  9. For Broadcasting Destination, click SET DESTINATION.
  10. Click Facebook.
  11. Log into Facebook, using the Email address option, with your Facebook login/password.
Note: If you don't see the Facebook login/password screen, but instead go directly to the Permissions page, it's because SlingStudio Console is using the same login information that the Mac's Safari browser is using for Facebook.
To change to another Facebook account, use Safari to log out from the current Facebook account. After doing that, you should then see the Facebook login/password page in SlingStudio Console. You can then log in to the correct Facebook account.
  12. Allow Facebook to process the sign-on. When you are asked for various permissions, be sure to allow them.
  13. Set BROADCAST TO as Pages, Groups, or Events, as you prefer.
  14. Click your timeline.
  15. Click Publish Now to for an event that you want to start now; if you chose Pages, click Schedule a New Post to schedule a future broadcast at a set time.
NOTE: The Schedule a New Post option is not available for Groups or Events.
  16. Fill in the information fields. Be sure to select the PRIVACY option that you want.
  17. Click SET DESTINATION at the bottom of the screen.
You return to the PROJECT SETTINGS screen.
  18. Review your project settings, and then click CREATE.
  19. If you see dialog boxes about media storage and setting up your audio, handle those as you wish.
  20. Back at SlingStudio Console, choose a video source to put in the PREVIEW window. When you’re ready, promote it to PROGRAM.
  21. Click LIVE in the upper-right corner.
  22. Confirm in any dialog boxes that appear.
The LIVE button turns red to indicate that you’re currently broadcasting.
If you want to monitor your Facebook broadcast, using a device other than the Mac that's running SlingStudio Console, open a web browser and go to the Facebook website. Or open the Facebook app on a mobile device.
IMPORTANT: Do not use the Mac that is running SlingStudio Console as a Facebook monitor! Doing this could consume enough network bandwidth to cause serious streaming problems.
  23. If you choose to monitor your Facebook broadcast, be sure to sign on to Facebook using the credentials that you used with SlingStudio Console a few moments ago.
You should be able to see your SlingStudio broadcast on your Facebook feed.
  24. To stop broadcasting, click LIVE from the upper-right corner of SlingStudio Console. Confirm as needed in any dialog boxes that appear.
NOTE: Once you stop a Facebook broadcasting stream, you have to set up an entirely new broadcast event to continue live-streaming. By Facebook design, you cannot use a previous post to resume a broadcast.

Want to review Internet connectivity quality as you stream video?

You can do that in either of two ways.

    • Click the Dashboard icon in the lower-right corner of the Console main window.
Or choose Dashboard from the Window menu.
      The Dashboard opens.
    • In the lower-left corner of the Dashboard, you see the LIVE BROADCASTING section.
    • Click Stream Quality (in blue type).
The Live Broadcasting Quality Indicator opens.
